With strong support from our partner, Mondo Foundation, HELP proposed the reconstruction of 15 schools in Sindhupalchowk after the earthquake. Using a community-led rebuilding model, 13 schools were selected based on their readiness to collaborate. HELP became one of the first local organisations in Nepal to sign an MoU with the Department of Education (CLPIU) and the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) for the reconstruction of these schools.
Funding for the construction was secured on a school-by-school basis, with additional support from several organisations, including School in a Bag. Once preparations were complete, we began training the local workforce in partnership with Training Centre Nepal, a leading vocational institute in Kathamndu. This community-led approach not only generated income for local people but also helped them gain valuable skills they could later apply to rebuilding their own homes. Five masons from each village participated in a seven-day training course in earthquake-resistant construction. We believed that strengthening community ownership was essential. Schools would thrive only when local people were actively involved, and rebuilding provided a meaningful way to engage them during this critical time.
Reconstruction began after HELP completed Temporary Learning Centres across 45 schools in coordination with the District Education Office. We were proud to help rebuild one of the first schools in Sindhupalchowk after the Earthquake in Sindhupalchowk at Shree Pema Chholing Basic School, where eight rooms were retrofitted and four new classrooms were constructed.
Our efforts ranged from rebuilding a small primary school serving 40 children in Dabchung to transforming the school in Bhotenamlang into a large secondary school serving more than 600 students. We also constructed climate-friendly classroom buildings using rammed-earth technology in two schools in Melamchi Municipality, in the villages of Gufa and Chhamkhu.
Our latest school reconstruction work was for Shree Langarche Secondary School in PaanchPokhari, which we funded in 2023.
In total, approximately £1 million was raised and invested over five years to rebuild 13 schools. The following are the schools reconstructed:
