THE HIMALAYAN GAMES 2017 successfully held

The Himalayan Games 2017, an interscholastic tournament event for Sindhupalchok based schools was held at Shree Satkanymati Secondary School in the village of Gunsa from 24 to 27 February, 2017. The Himalayan Games is a biennial event that Helambu Education and Livelihood Partnership (HELP) organises and this year it was hosted by Shree Satkanyamati Secondary School, Gunsa. 430 students from 27 community schools from the western Sindhupalchok area participated in the game. The tournament had competitions for 18 different activities ranging from football to table-tennis to badminton to relay runs etc. The games were run separately for Secondary and Primary level and the participating students were vying for a total of 147 positions.

District Education Officer, Sindhupalchok, Nirmal Ghimire opened the event by lighting a torch after which the participating students marched past the village. Minister of Health, Gagan Kumar Thapa attended the closing ceremony and distributed prizes/certificates. Amongst the guests was also Dr. Bidyanath Koirala, an educationist who spoke to some 100 teachers gathered on ways the underfunded rural schools can achieve quality education.

Shree Nurbuling Secondary School, Kiul bagged both the secondary and primary level trophies. Whist, Shree Satkanaya Secondary School, Jyamire took home third positions in both categories, Shree BhotangDevi Secondary School, Bhotang carried home the 2nd position under Secondary category and Yangrima Boarding School, Sermathang won the 2nd position in Primary category. Key supporters for event this year were MondoChallenge Foundation and Adventure Aid, UK.

Alongside the Himalayan Games, Health Minister, Gagan Kumar Thapa also handed over the newly constructed buildings with 13 classrooms built.
