Today, 4th of October, the official handover of the hostel for girls at Shree Golma Devi Secondary School was celebrated in the presence of many distinguished guests including Nima Gyalzen Sherpa, the chair of Helambu Rural Municipality. This summer, we spent three weeks in Helambu, Nepal, teaching at one of HELP’s partnership schools, Shree Bhotenamlang School. HELP (Helambu Education and Livelihood Partnership) is a charity that works with schools in the Helambu region, helping to improve the quality of education in rural areas where education is not necessarily prioritised for children. My volunteering experience was spent at Shree Devi Bhotang Secondary School, in the village of Bhotang, where I taught English ranging from Grades 1 to 10.
When I first arrived, the children were quite hesitant to speak English and hide behind their mothers’ skirts when I approached them. However, this shyness did not last long! Last year, on Baishakh 12, we lost thousands of lives and suffered massive infrastructural damage in the aftermath of the tragic 7.8 ML earthquake. The same day, this year, Mondo-HELP built and inaugurated the secondary school (in a month) – Shree Pema Chholing Lower Secondary School in Sindupalchowk.
